Concern about high-calorie beverage consumption

Consumption of high calorie beverages in Indonesia alarming. Most teenagers Indonesia consume lots of high-calorie sweet drinks are bad for your health.

Hardinsyah, professor at the Department of Community Nutrition, Faculty of Human Ecology, Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), Saturday (7/16/2011), states, every day adults and adolescents in Indonesia eat lots of sweet drinks of tea or coffee is given a lot sugar and various kinds of sodas and instant beverages.

Energy intake of high calorie beverages in adults in Indonesia 450 calories per day, while teenagers 420 calories per day. This figure is almost equal to the United States that energy intake from calorie drinks reach 465 calories per day.

Calories the body needs to move in adolescents and adults are on average 1800-2800 calories per day. When sweet drinks are consumed adolescents and adults reach 420-450 calories per day, meaning more than 20 percent of calories come from sugary drinks. Not to mention the calories obtained from food consumed each day.

When referring to the recommended World Health Organisation (WHO), caloric intake of sweet foods and beverages up to 10 percent of calories your body needs per day. "This condition is alarming. If left unchecked, in the future we will have a generation of unhealthy, "said Hardinsyah. High-calorie beverages increases the risk of obesity (overweight) and the emergence of various degenerative diseases, like diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart.

Research by the name of "Thirst" is tested 1,200 people aged youth and adults who live in the lowlands and highlands in the six cities, namely Jakarta, Surabaya, Makassar, Lembang, Malino, and Malang. In addition to examining the type and amount of food and beverage intake, "Thirst" examines the status of hydration, hydration knowledge, physical activity, and nutritional status.
