In a study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology of more than 2299 men known to men who have high levels of vitamin D appears to have a high sex hormone levels as well.
Low testosterone levels affect the male libido and lower energy levels. Testosterone also plays an important role, either in men or women, to maintain muscle strength and bone density.
Researchers from the Medical University of Graz, Austria, found men who had vitamin D levels less than 30 nanograms per milliliter of blood, have higher testosterone than those who are deficient in vitamin D.
Because the respondents in the study were men who lived in the four seasons, it was known their testosterone levels peaked in August and fall dramatically in the winter, especially in March.
Professor Winfriend Marz, who conducted the research, said that the focus of research scientists today is to find out whether vitamin D supplements have the same effect on testosterone levels.
Nevertheless, cancer experts caution that too much sun exposure is bad for health.
"Medically we can actually increase levels of libido in men with testosterone supplementation therapy," said Allan Pacey, senior lecturer in andrology.
